Mr. Liu was a participant of the 1989 pro-democracy movement in Beijing.
From August of 1989 to August of 1990, he
served as the founding president of the
Independent
Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars in USA (IFCSS), which represented
more than 40,000 Chinese
students and scholars studying in the United States in 1989-1990. As
IFCSS's founding president, he played a leading role in organizing
large scale congressional lobbies and in organizing
the 1989 Washington March for
Democracy in China. In
the summer of 1990, he founded the Global Chinese Student Union and
became its president to coordinate pro-democracy activities of
Chinese students and scholars world-wide till the summer of 1991. Mr. Liu appeared in numerous English and Chinese media including New
York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and USA
Today. Due to his past pro-democracy activities, he has been banned by the Chinese
authority from visiting home for the last 20 years. His name was placed on Chinese
government's top black list.
