We
aim to develop new measurement technologies with applications to
measuring quality of democracy and the opening of authoritarian
regimes. Especially, we use our technologies to
measure Chinese democracies.
Under
this project, we have found that measurement error is pervasive in
all the democracy measurements and used advanced methods such as SEM and
CART to assess
systematic errors and random errors of the common used democracy indices
like the Freedom House rating, with a purpose to help developing better measurements of democracy. At
the same time, we apply our unique RM4Es and
ResearchMap technologies to build a measurement system
that will be used to objectively measures China’s pro-democracy changes with
its resulted special reports to serve the academic and policy
communities.
The measurement
system of Chinese democracy as resulted from this special
application will
not be a rough-cut ranking that allows comparing China to
other democratic countries, but a sensitive measure that allows detecting any positive and negative changes in China’s political
system. This work will be the first such kind of effort that is
expected to produce significant contribution to academic, policy and
democracy advocates communities.
