MGMT 291

Structural Equation Modeling

  1.  Course Description and Objectives

MGMT 291 introduces to students the basic concepts, methodology and computing tools of structural equation modeling. Emphasis will be placed on developing a working familiarity with some of the common statistical procedures, coupled with their application through the use of statistical software.  It is a seminar course for the Ph.D. Candidates in the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California at Irvine

  1. Course Requirements

Each student will need to complete 4 problem sets and a final presentation.

  1. Problem Sets

The emphasis of the problem sets is on understanding SEM concepts and obtaining familiarities with computing methods. Late homework will NOT be accepted.

  • Assignment One - Research Proposal (due in the third week)

  • Assignment Two - Initial Model Specification (due in the fifth week)
  • Assignment Three - Model Estimation (due in the seventh week)
  • Assignment Four - Model Modification and Final Model (due in the ninth week)
  1. Final Presentation

On the last day of the class, each student is required to make a presentation on his/her research.

  1. Grades

The course grade will be determined using the following distribution:

                                                                                    Percentage

                                    Problems Sets                                 60%

                                    Seminar Participation                    15%

                                    Final Presentation                          25%

  1. Software

We will use LISREL. Each student should download the student edition of LISREL 8.7 for Windows. CLICK here to download or go to http://www.ssicentral.com/other/entry.htm.

  1. Lectures

The lecture will be held in GSM 410 from 2:00pm to 4:50pm of every Monday. The course is taught by Dr. Alex Liu. He can be reached by email at alex@ResearchMethods.org  .
